Press release

The European Commission has approved the actions of the Just Transition Fund (JTF) as part of the EU regional and structural policy programme Innovation and Skills in Finland 2021−2027. The implementation will start in autumn 2023, when calls for proposals will be opened. All calls will be announced on the rakennerahastot.fi website.

The fund will compensate for the adverse socio-economic and environmental effects of the Government Programme on halving the energy use of peat by the end of 2030. The regionally equitable transition from peat will be supported by diversifying the economy, adapting the labour force in the sector and remedying the adverse environmental impacts.

Implementation is guided by 14 regional transition plans, in which each region has further defined the actions to be financed. Approximately EUR 665 million is available for project activities during the programme period 2021–2027. The JTF programme area comprises the seven provinces of Eastern and Northern Finland, and the regions of South Ostrobothnia, Satakunta, Central Finland, South Karelia, Kymenlaakso, Ostrobothnia and Pirkanmaa. However, the Pirkanmaa JTF area only comprises Parkano, Kihniö, Virrat and Punkalaidun.

Decisions on the projects to be funded are taken by the JTF regional associations and the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment. Potential applicants are encouraged to follow the application advertisements and other news in their area. Project applications and project management will be handled electronically through EURA 2021.
